![]() Lacking a visual cue from the horizon at night, and uncertain what instruments were and were not accurate, they stalled and plummeted to the sea. The pilot found himself manually flying the plane at a moment when he couldn't ascertain what instruments were correct and which were not, ergo why they didn't trust them, and with some of the most advanced automated safety systems in aviation disabled. The A330 was designed so that the computer fly-by-wire should prevent any input that would put the plane into a stall condition, but a series of factors lined up that disabled that protection without the pilot's awareness while also providing the pilot with inconsistent or incomplete information about what was happening. The corrective action would be to pitch the nose down to gain air speed and lift on the wings, but the pilot flying the plane continued to keep the nose up as the plane plummeted from the sky. ![]() They ignored multiple warnings and indications that they were approaching and then had entered a stall. Tail first isn't quite right, but Air France Flight 447 crashed belly first into the mid-Atlantic with 16.2 degrees up angle. : WARNING WARNING Air Pressure System is set to Manual, Take off systems disabled (meaning you can't accelerate at all). I am not sure why /u/conflagrare is getting downvoted, they are right to some degree.Įdit: and in this case, the automated checklist would have caught the problem. Now, I will fully admit, as you point out, if the button is malfunctioning then you could get an erroneous error that will cost lives however consider that most planes, Airbus / Boeing do all kinds of automated shit without the pilots knowledge already, it's hard to argue that an automated checklist would be more dangerous. There is nothing wrong with a button, and in an emergency situation it could save lives. If you watch enough of the shows I mentioned where they cover the investigations, a lot of planes crash before the crew can get to the part of the checklist that is part of the problem. That way pilots don't rely on the automated system by default. ![]() In fact, the automated checks should probably be run after the usual manual checklist. Pressing one button to tell you A, B, C, is in order, and X, Y, Z is not, can tip you off to something you might have not have checked in your manual checks. There are absolute configurations that need to be set for takeoff, normal flight, and landing. Having watching tons of hours Mayday / Air Crash Investigation, and with the crazy automation on all other levels of modern airplanes, an automated checklist could have saved thousands of lives. While I agree you can't absolutely rely on automation, there is nothing wrong to have certain automated checklists in addition to the manual backup. Well nobody says you have to have one without the other. Want to submit a video which is not a documentary? Respect the community, and do not consign their comments to the memory hole.
